The Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived Award spotlights people 65 and older who have made a significant contribution in our community or in a community where they have lived and who exemplify a life well lived.
Irene L. Johnson
A native Savannahian, Mrs. Johnson enjoyed a long and accomplished career as an educator and social worker. As an elementary school teacher for the local public school system, reading instructor at the former Harris Reading Center, and a paraprofessional at Haven Elementary School, Mrs. Johnson helped shaped many young minds. During her 26 years at the Coastal Center for Developmental Services, she assisted individuals who were mentally capable, but challenged, to find work and to gain skills needed to live independently. Following retirement, she has continued to volunteer in several ministries and organizations, including her church, St. James AME.
