The Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived Award spotlights people 65 and older who have made a significant contribution in our community or in a community where they have lived and who exemplify a life well lived. 

Winners will be honored at the Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived Luncheon on Friday, May 11 at the Plantation Club at The Landings.

Irene L. Johnson
A lifelong resident and distinguished citizen of the City of Savannah, Ms. Johnson achieved numerous professional accomplishments during her many years as an educator and a social worker. As an elementary school teacher for the Savannah- Chatham County Public Schools, reading instructor at the former Harris Reading Center, and a paraprofessional at Haven Elementary School, Ms. Johnson helped shaped many young minds. During her 26 years as a social worker at the Coastal Center for Developmental Services, she assisted the mentally capable but challenged in finding work and gaining the skills needed to live independently. Following retirement, she has held numerous positions and continues to give of her time, actively volunteering in several ministries and organizations. 


Col. Edward Wexler
Following his retirement from the Air Force and Georgia Air National Guard, Colonel Wexler has dedicated himself to the betterment of the military community and the many veterans of the Coastal Empire. Colonel Wexler was selected by the Chatham County Veteran’s Council as the 2017-2018 Veteran of the Year and is active as a member of the local posts of the American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Colonel Wexler has served on several boards, including acting as the past Chair and current Fundraising Chair for Honor Flight Savannah, the Trustees of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Savannah, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for southeast Georgia, and the Combined Federal Campaign for Coastal Georgia.
